Cape Breton is packed with fun things to do, whether you live here or you’re just visiting for the summer. From scenic drives to delicious eats, here are 8 activities to check out if you’re looking to explore something new:

1. Take a Scenic Drive on the Cabot Trail

Experience the beauty of the Cabot Trail, a scenic route known for its stunning ocean views and charming villages. Along the way, stop for some ice cream or fried chicken from Mr. Chicken!!!!!

Location: The Cabot Trail is a 298-kilometer loop that starts and ends in Baddeck, NS.

Tips & Tricks: The Cabot Trail is best experienced over a day or two, allowing time to stop and explore along the way. Popular stops include Ingonish Beach, Cape Smokey, and the small fishing village of Chéticamp. Be sure to fill up on gas before you start, as stations can be sparse along certain stretches.

2. Hike to Stunning Views

Cape Breton boasts some of the most beautiful hiking trails in Canada. Grab your favorite snacks and hit the trails like Cape Clear, Skyline Trail, Egypt Falls, and Gypsum Mines for breathtaking views and a refreshing outdoor experience.

Tips & Tricks: The Skyline Trail is especially popular for sunset views, so plan your hike to arrive at the lookout before sunset. Cape Clear offers panoramic views but requires a bit of a drive on unpaved roads. Egypt Falls, also known as Piper’s Glen Falls, is a hidden gem and a bit challenging, so wear sturdy shoes.

3. Enjoy a Beach Day at Chimney Corner Beach

Spend a relaxing day at Chimney Corner Beach, a hidden gem perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and taking in the coastal scenery. 

Location: Chimney Corner Beach, Chimney Corner, NS, near Margaree Harbour.

Tips & Tricks: This beach is a bit off the beaten path, making it a quiet and relaxing spot. Pack a picnic, bring a beach umbrella for shade, and enjoy the crystal-clear waters and sandy beach. Arrive early to secure a good spot, especially on weekends.


4. Savour a Waterfront Seafood Feast

Indulge in the local seafood at spots like the Freight Shed or other amazing waterfront restaurants. A seafood feast by the water is a must in Cape Breton.

Tips & Tricks: At Freight Shed, try the lobster roll or seafood chowder while enjoying the view of Baddeck Harbour. For the best experience, dine outside on the patio. Reservations are recommended, especially during peak tourist season.

Tips & Tricks: Cape Breton pizza is famous for its crispy crust and delicious toppings. Don’t forget to ask for donair sauce on the side—it’s a local favorite. Both Tom’s Pizza and A1 are popular spots, so you might want to call ahead to order during peak hours.

Tips & Tricks: The Fortress of Louisbourg is an immersive historical site where you can explore life in the 18th century. Plan to spend at least half a day here. Wear comfortable walking shoes, and bring a camera to capture the incredible reconstructions. Guided tours are available and enhance the experience.

8. Admire Lighthouses Along the Cape Breton Coast

Cape Breton is home to some beautiful lighthouses—and they’re worth the drive. Start at the Louisbourg Lighthouse, one of the oldest in North America, and explore a few more along the way.
